How a Bill Becomes an Act
FOP Legislation

There are many things which have contributed to the FOP's successful legislative efforts over the years. The fact that the Fraternal Order of Police speaks for law enforcement is important. The active involvement and hard work of thousands of FOP members building relationships with their representatives in Columbia and Washington opens doors and convinces legislators to do the right thing when it comes to protecting society's protectors. And certainly having an experienced, well-positioned lobbyist who's known as an advocate for law enforcement is a key part of FOP's success.

The South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police retains a full-time lobbyist to make your voice heard in the South Carolina Legislature. Our lobbyist monitors and consults with other interest groups involved in law enforcement policy, advocacy and political activities on behalf of South Carolina's FOP membership.

Legislative Topics

False Identification
STATUS: Passed! Our false identification bill, H.3059, was sponsored by Rep. Mike Pitts (R-Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens). It was pointed out to FOP that many times law enforcement officers are given incorrect identification when confronted with a violation. Consequently, officers waste time chasing innocent victims and the real culprits are free, for a while. The current statute allowed arrest for giving false ID and information in the course of a criminal investigation only, or under oath. We hope this change in the law will benefit the enforcement process. Other good results of passage of our bill should be reductions in identification theft, help with illegal aliens, and aiding Homeland Security measures.

EXPLANATION: Will be unlawful for an individual to misrepresent his identification to a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop or for the purpose of avoiding arrest or criminal charges.
